It is our great pleasure to invite you to Indiana University for the GLACURH 2008 Conference.

We are extremely excited about the opportunity to host this conference and have great confidence in our bid team. They have accomplished a lot in a short amount of time and we believe the enthusiasm will continue. We are confident in their ability to be successful in hosting a great GLACURH and they have already garnered support from many aspects of campus - including Residential Programs and Services, Indiana Memorial Union, Dean of Students Office and the Office of Diversity Education. Indiana University looks forward to sharing it's services, staff, and facilities with our colleagues from other schools as well as introducing them to our spirit and traditions.

The Residence Halls Association and National Residence Hall Honorary members are also in support of the conference and have pledged their time to assisting the conference committee. The conference will be incorporated into our regular business meetings and regular updates will be given by the conference co-chairs. We are excited to share with others and assist with conference efforts. We are happy to increase our involvement at the regional level and serve GLACURH as a conference host.

We look forward to welcoming you to come take a ride on GLACURH 2008: Tour de Leadership!!

Sincerely Yours,

Sarah Colan and Jen Dunning, Co-Chair, GLACURH 2008

Origins of the Little 500

What was to become the "World's Greatest College Weekend" was created by Howard S. Wilcox, then executive director of the Indiana University Foundation, in 1950. An IU Foundation Student Committee had been formed to raise awareness of the IU Foundation on campus, and Wilcox was searching for a new challenge to present to the highly motivated students.

Howdy Wilcox fondly remembers the inspiration for a bicycle race patterned after the Indianapolis 500, a race his father had won in 1919. "One evening, I heard a large commotion and walked over to some dormitories on the northeast side of the campus. There I saw four bicycle riders racing around a dormitory, with several girls leaning out of windows, cheering them. They were having a wonderful time!"
Howdy then asked the Student Foundation committee what they thought of staging a bicycle race as a means of raising scholarship money for students working their way through school. The response was unanimous: The Little 500 was born.
In the beginning, team members and fans gathered in what is today the Arboretum to witness the men's race. Over the years the single race moved to Bill Armstrong Stadium and blossomed into a wide range of events, from the Little 500 Biathlon to the Mini 500 trike race to the Golf Jamboree. All the activities culminate one weekend in April that has become synonymous with Indiana University.

The Oscar-winning film Breaking Away (1979) introduced moviegoers from all over the world to IU, Bloomington, and the excitement of the Little 500. Each year, celebrity spectators—such as David Letterman, John Mellencamp, and cycling legend Lance Armstrong—continue to bring the national spotlight with them when they come to enjoy the race festivities. Plus, there are students who have experienced the excitement of the race who return each year, bringing their families and new race enthusiasts.
